Reggambia is the documentary about the history and the conexion of the reggae music in the Gambia, considered as “the small Jamaica”.
SYNOPSIS
After years of colonialism, oppression and racism, the African and American colonies proclaimed their independence. The strong Jamaican influence made Gambia become a lover of reggae for its messages of equality, justice and the fact that it considers Africa as the Mother Earth, from where all Jamaicans have their origin.
Radio Syd, the first African private radio, decided to start its radio adventure in a just freed Gambia, where it began to play every single hit from the 70’s to the 90’s. In this music chart you could find artists such as Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, along with others. The message that Reggae spread was massively embraced in Gambia, generating an unconditional love towards this African descendant music.
This cultural-musical connection between Gambia and Jamaica made it possible for Gambia to become well-known as « the small Jamaica », where the Jamaican artists hug each other like brothers, and where the reggae music is listened to in every corner of the country.
