Ki jan an nou Lafanmi ?

3 années se sont écoulées depuis la sortie du dernier volet de la série EXOTYSME. Je me suis dit qu’il fallait que je prenne soin de mon public amateur de Hip Hop en lui proposant un nouveau projet dans l’esprit de celui qui a animé cette série.

SAME OLD iSH est né de la rencontre avec le compositeur haïtien BASQUIAT (soundcloud.com/baskyacht) basé à Brooklyn, notamment connu pour avoir composé le hit « Christ Conscious » (www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRfQGXFRr30) du rappeur Joey Bada$$.

Cette rencontre a porté ses premiers fruits en 2018 sur EXOTYSME VOL.3, mixtape qui compte 4 compositions de BASQUIAT sur un total de 11 morceaux.

Le titre du projet est inspiré de SAMO (Same Old Shit), premier pseudonyme de l’artiste américain Jean-Michel BASQUIAT originaire d’Haïti et de Porto-Rico.

Après avoir baptisé le projet, et trouvé la photo qui en ferait la couverture, l’idée d’y intégrer un symbole rappelant l’univers de Jean-Michel BASQUIAT s’est naturellement imposée.

Difficile de trouver mieux que l’iconique couronne chère à l’artiste, qu’il utilisait régulièrement dans ses œuvres pour notamment souligner la majesté de ses influences et héros, parmi lesquels on pouvait compter artistes, écrivains, athlètes révolutionnaires et musiciens.

En utilisant de façon répétée le motif et en se représentant le portant dans ses peintures, Jean-Michel BASQUIAT entendait poursuivre le travail entamé par ses héros.

C’est dans la même idée de représentation et de poursuite du travail accompli par nos héros disparus qu’une couronne figure sur la couverture de l’opus SAME OLD iSH.

What’s up Fam !

It has been three years since I have released the last part of the “EXOTYSME” series. For me, it was imperative to take care of my Hip Hop community by proposing a new project with a similar energy and vibe.

SAME OLD iSH was born from my encounter with Haitian composer BASQUIAT, based in Brooklyn, New York. BASQUIAT is a versatile Hip Hop producer, notably known for composing the hit “Christ Conscious” (www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRfQGXFRr30) for the rapper Joey Bada$$.

This encounter was fruitful and produced its first fruits in 2018 on EXOTYSME VOL.3 mixtape, which houses four compositions by BASQUIAT on a total of eleven songs.

The title for the project was inspired by SAMO (Same Old Shit), which was the first pseudonym of the American artist of Haitian and Puerto-Rican descent Jean-Michel BASQUIAT.

After starting the project, I found a picture from a friend that would be perfect for the cover. The idea of integrating a symbol that would represent Jean-Michel BASQUIAT’s universe quickly emerged afterwards.

It was quite impossible to find a better symbol than the iconic crown that was so very dear to the artist. He would often use it in his pieces to symbolize the royalty of his role models and heroes, who varied from artists to groundbreaking athletes.

Jean-Michel BASQUIAT repeatedly used the crown symbol throughout his work, and he would use it in particular in his paintings. For him, depicting himself with a crown was a way to show that he was following in the footsteps of his heroes.

It’s in the same spirit and respect for our forgotten heroes that a crown was placed on the SAME OLD iSH album cover.
